Record Your Gnome Desktop Instantly in Ubuntu 18.04

If you only want to record your desktop in Ubuntu 18.04, press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+R to start or stop recording. The tool is built-in so no need to install extra software! But it will not record sounds! If you need sound, look further down on this page.

The default time limit for recordings are 30 seconds, to increase it open a terminal and type:

gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys max-screencast-length 7200

This set the time limit to 2 hours (7200 seconds). If you don’t like to use the terminal you can install dconf editor in Ubuntu Software. Edit the key “/org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/media-keys/max-screencast-length”.

Record Ubuntu desktop with sound

For those who need a screen recorder with more features, use Kazam,
SimpleScreenRecorder (both available in Ubuntu Software), or Green Recorder.

Kazam is very good and can produce videofiles using compression. For a 45 minutes recording I got a 400MB mp4-file.
